My “Palm Tree Conscious” was awakened recently when I was walking in the West Portal neighborhood and saw a single lone palm towering above the houses in the middle of a block. This was such a dramatic site I was surprised I had never noticed it before. The one thing I feel is constant in San Francisco even after living here many years is there is always something new to discover.

Dolores Street has always been known for the palm trees lining the center of the street, but the “Palming of San Francisco” has taken hold on other major streets. The Embarcadero, Market Street and Octavia Boulevard are streets where the palm trees have matured, and become a substantial part of the “Greening of San Francisco” and the urban landscape.

Tuesday Broker’s Tour gives me the opportunity to drive through many different neighborhoods in one day. Now that my “Palm Tree Conscious” had been awakened I found lone palms all over town. Without any research you can imagine palm trees in the warmer neighborhoods like Noe Valley, and the Mission, but I found tall lone palms in the outer Richmond too.

Looking more closely, I noticed palm trees being planted as street trees adding a new character to the street scene. This is especially true when there is new construction. On first glance, street tree palms seem to solve the issue of roots growing out under the sidewalk breaking the concrete, and invading the sewer lines.  Before you plant a street palm it is wise to check with the city for advice, or the nursery where you purchased your palm. The Friends of the Urban Forest is a good resource too.

I hope you will enjoy my video of palm trees around town and my more extensive collection of photographs of palm trees on my Facebook business page: San Francisco City Living. I will be adding more photos to this collection.
